Possible Dissertation: The Changing Nature of the Succubus in Contemporary Urban Fantasy

4/12/2024

Big Gender Relations/Literary/Theological Question of the Day:  The Changing Image of the Succubus.  Traditionally Succubi are dangerous, evil creature that have sex with men in a process of destruction.  But that has been changing in the 21st Century.  Now that succubus is a woman that unfortunately (or maybe fortunately) has to have a lot of sex and might possibly suck away part of a man’s life force.  Aside from that, succubus seem to be very positive creatures.  “Lost Girl’s” Bo vigorously fought evil of all sorts. Richelle Mead‘s Georgina Kincaid is a downright nice person who just want a husband, family, and children.  I just read about a succubus who is a great cook who makes her lover healthy box lunches!  What accounts for this changing image of the succubus?  Was it the Sexual Revolution of the 1960’s?  The Feminist Movement of the 1970’s?  Has a more woman-positive version of Christianity gradually had an effect on the image of the succubus?  Inquiring minds want to know.  Perhaps more importantly there is a great dissertation there waiting for some enterprising grad student to write.
