There is an argument made that it was the temperance movement, and the 18th Amendment to the Constitution (Prohibition), that ended the Progressive Movement, the wave of reform that swept the country between about 1896 and 1920. Basically Prohibition, was widely resented, widely resisted and was widely perceived as going too far in an attempt to control personal behavior. I am wondering if DEI in its various manifestations has triggered the same effect in the contemporary Unites States: a sense of overreach into personal attitudes and behavior that has triggered so much resentment that it has negated any good effects it might have achieved — as well as a political rejection of the reformers.
