I was just watching video of the Trooping of the Color — the spectacular parade held every year in June to celebrate the monarch of Great Britain’s birthday. The climatic moment is when the red-coated guards march past the royal family in stately slow time. As he passes in front of the monarch, the ensign (the man who is carrying the color that is being trooped) must lift the color out and with one hand do a sweeping motion that swings the color horizontally across his front and hold it in front of him as he marches slowly in front of royalty. Through the miracle of telepathy I was able to hear the thoughts of the ensign as he performs this maneuver Those thoughts went like this: “Dear God, don’t let me drop the flag. Whatever else, please don’t let me drop the f@#king flag.”
