Emergency Powers

8/12/25

I think that the United States is discovering, as many others nations before us have, that it is not a good idea to allow the president to have “emergency powers.” (For example, allowing arbitrary control over tariffs, immigration enforcement, or our nation’s capital.) Moreover, to do so without carefully defining exactly what constitutes an emergency, what those powers are, how far they extend, for how long, and how they come to an end, is really not wise.  This should not come as a surprise, though many seem to be.
