Reporting on the No King’s rallies held on Saturday, October 18, 2025, much has been made of the good humor shown, the people dancing, or in funny costumes, the sense of community shown, the joy displayed by the participants.  It’s hard to see what’s wrong with this.

Sadly, plenty.

The protests were not about things that should be celebrated.. They were not about things that were good.  They were not about things that should make us happy.  This is not the time for funny costumes. Joy is not the appropriate response to the actions of Donald Trump and MAGAland.

The appropriate response is to be upset, to proclaim that what is going on is wrong. The appropriate response is to display anger and rage. 

Aside from the question of what is appropriate, Trump’s supporters have no particular reason to be bothered by large happy street fairs — they can laugh and enjoy the show with the rest of us.  Until Trump and the MAGAhats are made aware that a substantial portion of the country is angry and demanding change, until they have cause to at least worry, about the opposition, no change is likely to occur. 

Anger not Joy.
