Thought for the Day: I was recently looking at pictures of the field uniforms of French soldiers at the beginning of the Great War in 1914 and comparing them to the British Army field uniforms of the same time. The French Army uniforms included red trousers, colorful kepis and all leather load bearing gear. Compared to the British Army’s khaki uniforms and web gear, the British Army seems looking forward to World War II, while the French Army’s was looking back to the Crimean War. I am told that people who design things for a living have a saying that “if it looks right, it is right.” On that basis the French Army looked like something was very much not right in 1914, which is a broad generalization but seems born out by the facts.
