What are we Reading

10/11/2026

Everything I need to know about life, I learned by reading bad fiction:

Anyone who reads even a small amount of genre fiction (mysteries, thrillers, science fiction, fantasy, rom-coms or romances) learns that if you are three-quarters of the way through the book, and things are going great for the good guys, there is a big plot twist coming up.

I am thinking of this as I read the political news:  Everything is going the Democrats’ way.  Democrats are overwhelmingly favored to take the House and many are even saying that they are now favored to take the Senate.  Pundits are predicting a blue wave.

If the Democratic Party picked up a romance to read, then the Democrats have had their meet-cute, they’ve gotten interested in the other main character, they’ve had a successful date, a night of passion, and they are busy professing their love.  The problem is that we are only three-quarters of  the way through the book and the path of true love never runs smooth. There is trouble coming.  If this is a genre romance, the Democrats will overcome it and reach their happily-ever-after.  It they screwed up and picked up literary fiction by mistake, then they are doomed, and we still have a quarter of the book to go through before we find out what we’re reading.
